Bangladesh is currently facing a severe power crisis, leading to frequent load shedding and disruptions in electricity supply. Electricity Distribution Companies Struggle to Meet Demand: The capital city, Dhaka, experiences an average of three to five hours of load shedding per day, while rural areas endure even longer durations. On Thursday morning at 10 am, Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) faced a shortfall of 185 megawatts, and Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) faced a shortage of approximately 350 megawatts. Electricity distribution companies attribute the increased demand for electricity to the extreme heatwave. The rising temperatures have significantly raised the demand for electricity, outpacing the available supply. As a result, load shedding has become a regular practice to manage the supply-demand gap. Load Shedding Affects Rural and Urban Areas: Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) supplies electricity to approximately 55% of consumers in the country. However, due to the power production deficit, load shedding has become a common occurrence in these areas as well. The inability to meet the demand has created a significant gap between supply and demand, leading to load shedding.
Power Crisis Hampers Bangladesh Power Development Board: Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) is unable to increase power generation due to the scarcity of fuels such as gas, LNG, and coal. The inadequate supply of these resources has hampered the operation of power plants, resulting in a substantial shortfall in production. Consequently, load shedding has escalated across the country.
Solutions and Future Prospects of Power Generation Composition in Bangladesh: Around 47% of Bangladesh's total power generation capacity is based on gas. However, due to the gas crisis, all gas-based power plants are unable to operate at full capacity. These plants have a combined production capacity of approximately 11,000 megawatts. Furnace oil and diesel-based power plants have a capacity of over 7,122 megawatts, surpassing coal-based power plants, which have a capacity of 3,440 megawatts. Additionally, Bangladesh imports 1,000 megawatts of electricity from India to meet the demand.
Challenges Faced by Payra Thermal Power Plant: Due to the shortage of coal, one unit with a capacity of 25 megawatts at the Payra Thermal Power Plant has been shut down. The remaining unit with a capacity of 660 megawatts is producing 450 megawatts of electricity per day, depending on the available coal stock. The plant may only operate for another two to three days until the coal supply is replenished, resulting in a complete shutdown from June 3rd.
